The Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, is seeking a nationally recognized leader in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology to serve as Director of the Heart Failure Program. This position offers a unique opportunity to serve as the main clinical and academic lead of one of the most comprehensive and established advanced heart failure programs in the country. The Director will be empowered to shape the future of the program, expand its reach, and drive its continued growth across clinical care, research, and education.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative, highly accomplished team and will serve as the central leader of advanced HF, transplant, and mechanical circulatory support initiatives. Working in close partnership with our surgical directors and the medical directors of heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices, the Director will have the authority to guide strategy, oversee clinical operations, and expand academic and research initiatives. Academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor is available, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Program Highlights:

Heart Transplantation: ~20 transplants/year (390+ total), including heart-kidney transplants; innovation in DCD NRP protocols and preservation systems. The only NY heart transplant program outside of the Metropolitan NYC area.

LVAD Program: Among the largest in the U.S. with 65–85 implants/year and over 1,000 durable implants to date; ~280 patients currently supported. One of only two NY LVAD programs outside of the Metropolitan NYC area.

Surgical Team: Three full-time cardiothoracic surgeons dedicated to heart transplant and LVAD procedures.

Robust Clinical Infrastructure: 9.2 AHFT cardiologists, 12 outpatient APPs, transplant RNs, and comprehensive QI, regulatory, and data management support.

Research Strength: Backed by the Clinical Cardiovascular Research Center, the Clinical & Translational Science Institute, and the Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute.

Division and Facilities:

The Division of Cardiology includes over 70 faculty members with expertise in general cardiology, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, imaging, heart failure, cardio-oncology, women's heart health, and more. The division supports four fellowship programs and is home to a new, dedicated 22-bed Cardiac ICU and a 23-bed Advanced Heart Failure Unit. A state-of-the-art cardiovascular tower is under construction and set to open in 2026.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

        Provide overarching leadership of the advanced heart failure and transplant programs.

        Direct and expand clinical operations in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

        Drive growth and innovation across clinical programs, clinical trials, and quality improvement.

        Recruit, mentor, and develop faculty, fellows, and advanced practice providers.

        Expand the ACGME-accredited Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship program.

        Lead and support cutting-edge clinical, translational, and outcomes-based research.

        Strengthen collaboration across subspecialties, including congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension.

        Contribute to medical education, mentorship, and training of the next generation of leaders.

Qualifications:

MD or DO; Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology.
Completion of accredited Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Advanced HF/Transplant training programs.
Eligible for unrestricted New York State medical license and DEA registration.
Minimum of 5 years of clinical and leadership experience in advanced heart failure and transplantation.
Proven leadership acumen with strong communication, organizational, and academic skills.
Interest in Adults with Congenital Heart Disease or Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension is welcomed.
