The University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine (SOM) Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking an exceptional cardiothoracic surgeon for a full-time faculty position. This position is being recruited at the Open Rank level; salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is an excellent opportunity for a surgeon interested in academic and clinical opportunities and will be expected to participate in clinical care, teaching, and university service.
UNM serves a large, medically complex population and is a consultative resource for the State of New Mexico and the Four Corners region of the Southwest. Outpatient oncology services are provided through the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC), the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. UNMCCC is one of only 51 cancer centers in the nation to be designated by the NCI as a comprehensive cancer center, the highest federal designation and rating for cancer centers. UNMCCC’s 125 board-certified oncology specialty physicians provide comprehensive cancer care in every specialty, adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. The 130 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded almost $60 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects and published 301 high quality publications.
Cardiac surgery remains an essential component of acute inpatient and outpatient services at UNM as in every other tertiary, safety net hospital in the country; our brand-new Critical Care Tower opening October 2025 will provide access to state-of-the-art operating rooms including biplane hybrid OR, a brand new CTVICU staffed full time with specialized intensivists, and partnership with a nationally-recognized vascular surgery team specializing in complex aortic reconstruction.

Minimum requirements:
MD or equivalent
Board certification/eligibility in cardiothoracic surgery
Completion of an accredited residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery
Eligible for licensure in NM
Eligible for State of New Mexico Board of Pharmacy certification
Eligible for Federal DEA registration
Eligible to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications:
Distinguished personal record of clinical and research accomplishments in this specialty
Strong interest in teaching
Strong interest and expertise in minimally invasive surgery
A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities
