- Experimental Cardiac Surgery Research
Description
DESCRIPTION: Our laboratory is the cornerstone cardiovascular research program of the Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute. We are interested in partial heart transplantation, which is a new type of transplant designed to provide growing heart valve substitutes for infants. Our primary research model involves open heart surgery in piglets. The successful candidate will participate in piglet open heart surgery, and will be responsible for peri-operative care of the animals, organizing experiments, and publishing results. Responsibilities include administrating medicine to the animals, ordering animals and surgical supplies, analyzing tissue, and preparing documents such as IACUC protocols. If desired, there are also opportunities to join clinical ICU rounds, and clinical observation in the pediatric cardiac surgery operating room. So far, every researcher who worked in our lab was successful in matching into a categorical residency position (general surgery, internal medicine, and med-peds).
REQUIREMENTS: Applicants are expected to have completed USMLE Step 2 with a minimum score of 250. Please send inquiries to tkrajab@uams.edu and mention your USMLE score in your email, otherwise you may not receive a reply. We are able to sponsor US visas. The successful candidate will be required to submit a letter of recommendation confirming that they are not pursuing any other applications.
